A civilian was injured as forces resorted to tear gas shelling to quell a demonstration near the site of an ongoing encounter in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district late Sunday, witnesses said.

Couple of hours after an encounter broke out in the village in Khudwani area, the residents, in a bid to help the militants escape from the area, started pelting stones on the forces.
The forces responded with tear gas shelling, resulting in injuries to a civilian identified as Asif Ahmad of Redwani Bala.

Meanwhile, the exchange of firing continued Monday morning with no reports of any
casualties yet.

A police official said that militants fired on a joint party of Army 1 RR and CRPF who had cordoned off Redwani Bala village of Khudwani area at around 8pm, triggering an encounter.

Militants, believed to be two in number, have taken cover inside a residential house, he said.
