Mehbooba Mufti, the firebrand daughter of late Chief Minister Mufti Mohd Sayeed is witnessing a strong sympathy wave in her favour after the demise of her father who was seen as a calm and moderate leader in Kashmir. In comparison, the daughter who is set to take over as the CM is seen as more impulsive, mercurial, and moody. However, despite her image of being a moody leader there is a strong sympathy wave across Kashmir valley for Mehbooba, who is being seen as a natural heir to her father.
Some in the political circles believe that given the contradictions in coalition government, it is likely that differences will become sharper. Mehbooba is not known to be a supporter of the coalition, and her image is more of a mass leader rather than the more consummate Mufti Sayeed who was more a backroom leader, who preferred consensus, and a moderate line. Her inexperience as an administrator is also likely to be questioned, and might prove to be a stumbling block.
Her supporters however have faith in Mehbooba’s leadership, and ability to steer the party, and the government along her. Those who know her tell that she has mellowed down with time, and would be able to strike deals across the table in the same manner as she inspires the masses. Political watchers are also keenly watching how the two PDP camps in the party one that is supporting the coalition, and other opposed reacts to Mehbooba’s elevation. However, the people in Kashmir are right now in the mood to support her as CM as they want the works started by Mufti to be completed. Also they want her to be successful as she would be first Muslim woman to be chief minister of a state.
