Baramulla: 22 RR Sopore organized an awareness programme on growing menace of Drug Abuse in youth in collaboration with Civil Defence Organisation as a key stakeholder in disaster preparedness at Govt. Higher Sec. School Bomai under the supervision of 22RR Unit Pazalpora Zaingair Sopore today on 13th Feb 2015.
A large number of people participated in the programme including students, teachers, volunteers and respectable people from civil society.
On this occasion while giving a presentation Dr. Mir said the social and economic implications of substance abuse are worrisome. Increased absenteeism and deterioration in quality and quantity of work output are also witnessed in substance abuse cases. These youngsters who should be at the prime of their abilities become dysfunctional entities within society in the long term.
He also said that the effects of drug abuse are long-term and limitless, as they percolate through all the aspects of life. There is an increase in the crime rate, road accidents, suicides and suicidal attempts, deaths due to overdose, psychiatric disorders and high cost on general health issues due to chronic drug abuse like liver disorders, gastritis, accidental injuries and an increased risk for HIV infections due to Intravenous Drug Use (IDU).
They were also informed about the treatment facilities provided by the, J & K police , Civil Defence and Indian Army at Drug De-Addiction centres.
At the end an interactive session was held where students asked many questions which were answered by the experts .
The session concluded with vote of thanks by the chief guest.
