Indian Air Force is celebrating its 84th anniversary today. It was established in British India as an supplementary air force of the Royal Air Force with the enactment of the Indian Air Force Act 1932 on 8th October. The IAF has been following the core values of ‘Mission, Integrity and Excellence’ as a sacred responsibility

1) The IAF is the fourth largest Air Force in the world.
With 1,380 aircraft, the Indian Air Force lags behind only U.S.A, Russia and China which makes it the fourth largest air force in the world.


2) The IAF has a base in a foreign country.
It has a base in Farkhor, Tajikistan which is its only base outside India.

3) The IAF was referred to as Royal Indian Air Force from 1945 to 1950.
King George VI conferred the prefix “Royal” in 1945. In 1950, when India became a republic, the prefix was dropped.


4) Only one officer of IAF has been awarded with Param Vir Chakra.
Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon is the only IAF officer to have been honoured with the Param Vir Chakra. He was awarded posthumously for his act of conspicuous gallantry in the 1971 Indo-Pak War.



5) Arjan Singh is the only living officer to have attained the rank of Marshall.
The honorary rank of Marshal of the Indian Air Force is the highest achievable rank, and is equivalent to the rank of Field Marshal of the Indian Army. With the death of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Marshal of the Indian Air Force Arjan Singh is the only living Indian military officer with a 5-star rank .


6) The Motto of the Indian Air Force “Touch the Sky with Glory”

It has been taken from Bhagvad Gita. The Sankrit saying comes at a time in the Kurukshetra battle when Lord Krishna’s divine form is reaching the sky with glory, evoking fear and loss of self-control in Arjuna’s mind.
