27-year-old woman sub-inspector killed by a speeding SUV in Jalandhar; Samba man nabbed


Sub-inspector Jagdeep Kaur, 27, was killed in a road accident in Jalandhar on Saturday after her scooter was hit by a speeding SUV.

Jagdeep Kaur hailed from Fazalpur village in Tarn Taran district.

A Mahindra TUV, which had reportedly jumped the red light near Chunmun shopping mall, hit Kaur.The sub-inspector, who sustained serious head injury, was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

She was on her way to office, trying to cross traffic lights from bus stand road, when a SUV (JK02-BN-7142), coming from New Jawahar Nagar road, hit her scooter. The accused driver left the car and fled the spot.

The victim was taken to civil hospital’s trauma ward. She was referred to Satyam Hospital, where she succumbed to injuries. The body was later shifted to civil hospital for post-mortem.

Jagdeep Kaur was one of the first six women sub-inspectors, recruited in the city police two years back. She was posted in Model Town police station six months ago.

A case under Section 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against the accused driver Benu Kumar of Samba in Jammu and Kashmir. Police identified the accused on the basis of documents seized from the car.

While Sukhchain Singh, victim’s father, is a farmer, former Hockey star and Batala deputy superintendent of police Jugraj Singh and Commonwealth Games bronze Medalist Rajwinder Kaur are her cousins.
