2001 was most violent year in which 3,552 people lost their lives, 52 persons killed till March 31 this year: MHA report

Jammu, May 3: Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in response to a Right to Information (RTI) query has stated that over 40,961 persons including 13, 491 civilians, 5,055 security force personnel and 21, 965 terrorists were killed in Jammu and Kashmir since 1990.

Till march 31 this year, 52 persons including five civilians, 12 security men and 35 terrorists have been killed in insurgency related incidents, the report said.

The RTI application was submitted by Raman Sharma through online means in February this year seeking therein details about the loss of lives and damages caused to properties belonging to people due to armed rebellion in the state since its eruption about 28 years ago.

According to MHA report 2001 was the most violent year during which 3,552 people including 996 civilians, 536 security personnel and 2,020 terrorists lost their lives besides causing injuries to 1,587 security men although maximum number of civilians were killed in 1996 during which 1,341 civilians were killed and followed by 1,031 in the year 1995.

The report, however, confirms a sharp decline in insurgency related causalities till 2012 and has been marked the most peaceful year in nearly last three decades. 15 civilians, 15 security men and 72 terrorists were among total 102 causalities that had taken place during 2012.

The report further indicates, there has been a spiral in the fatal causalities in terrorist related incidents and the last year’s (2016) killings is more than double compared to 2012. During 2016 a total of 247 people including 15 civilians, 82 security personnel and 150 terrorists were killed.

Incidentally, the report provides year- wise comprehensive details of death and destruction during past 28 year.
In 1990, the report indicates that 461 civilians, 155 security men and 550 terrorists were killed while 382 civilians, 173 security personnel and 844 terrorists were killed in 1991; 634 civilians, 19 security men and 819 terrorists lost their lives during 1992; In 1993, the report said that 747 civilians, 198 security personnel and 1,310 terrorists were killed while in 1994 about 820 civilians, 200 security personnel and 1,596 terrorists lost their lives.

The report further suggests that 1,031 civilians, 237 security men and 1,332 terrorists were killed during 1995; during 1996, the report said 1,341 civilians, 184 security men and 1,209 terrorists were killed; in 1997, 971 civilians, 193 security personnel and 1,075 terrorists were killed; during 1998, 889 civilians, 236 security men and 999 terrorists were killed; In 1999 those killed included 873 civilians, 355 security personnel and 1,082 terrorists.

847 civilians, 397 security men and 1,520 terrorists were killed during the year 2000; in 2001, 996 civilians, 536 security men and 2,020 terrorists were killed; in 2002 those killed included 1,008 civilians, 453 security personnel and 1,707 terrorists; in 2003, 795 civilians, 314 security men and 1,094 terrorists were killed; in 2004, the report said those killed included 707 civilians, 281 security men and 976 terrorists.

In 2005, 557 civilians, 189 security men and 917 terrorists were killed; In 2006, those killed included 389 civilians, 151 security personnel and 591 terrorists were killed the report said; in 2007, 158 civilians, 110 security men and 472 terrorists were killed; In 2008 included 91 civilians, 75 security personnel and 339 terrorists were killed; In 2009, 71 civilians, 79 security men and 239 terrorists were killed; In 2010, those killed included 47 civilians, 69 security men and 232 terrorists were killed.

During 2011 those killed included 31 civilians, 33 security men and 100 terrorists; In 2012, 15 civilians, 15 security men and 72 terrorists were killed; In 2013, those killed included 15 civilians, 53 security men and 67 terrorists; In 2014, 28 civilians, 47 security personnel and 110 terrorists were killed;

In 2015, 17 civilians, 39 security men and 108 terrorists were killed; In 2016, those killed included 15 civilians, 82 security men and 150 terrorists were killed. In 2017, 5 civilians, 12 security personnel and 35 terrorists were killed till March 31 this year, the report added.
The report puts the statistics of injured security men at over 13,000
