61,000 contractual workers sacked; Departments request the government to roll back the order
Jammu and Kashmir government has started booting out 61,000 daily rated wagers, casual and contractual workers employed in various state government departments. The respective departments have stalled their salaries and they have been told that their services are no longer needed. However, it is to be noted that no official order has been issued by any of the departments to sack these workers.
As per news sources, the officers in various departments have referred to the order No. 384 of General Administrative Department (GAD) which says “all the engagements/ arrangements made by the different Departments/ Public Sector Undertakings/ Boards/ Autonomous Bodies under any scheme against sanctioned posts without any selection procedure, even on Contractual basis, shall cease to exist with immediate effect”. It is under this order that the Departments have terminated their services and have stalled their salaries.
While some wagers even complained that for some of them the salaries are pending for the past few months and now they have been suggested to wait for further orders. The government has however, set up a committee of ministers to take a holistic view of the daily and casual labourers.
It is to be noted that following the GAD orders and terminating their services will badly hit the working of the Departments. Some of them, have already taken up the issue with the concerned ministers with a request to roll back the order.
