Jammu: Now a days, we hear about road accidents happening in our state in which many people lose their precious lives and this phenomenon is getting more common than ever.
Our state J&K is mostly located in the Himalayan range and has mountainous roads with steep curves, deep gorges.
A few days ago, a news had come from Ramnagar in Udhampur district in which eleven persons died and 20 were seriously injured when an ill fated bus rolled down a gorge.
There is always news about the overcrowding of buses in the hilly terrains of Jammu and Kashmir where people are left with no other option besides travelling in the overcrowded buses, matadors plying in the hilly terrains. In many areas the condition of the roads is also in a deplorable condition. Rash driving is also a cause of accidents.
The authorities should remain very alert to prevent these kind of mishaps by conducting regular checking of the vehicles plying on the different routes of the city especially the vehicles on far flung, rural routes as these buses, matadors are mostly overcrowded. The overcrowding happens because of a severe lack of numbers of transport vehicles. Besides overcrowding, the drivers drive very rashly causing risk to both the passengers and themselves travelling in their vehicles.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH) accident statistics of 2014 says that Jammu & Kashmiraccounted for 5,861 accidents with 928 accidental deaths.
We need to change things and we need to change them fast for our own better and for the better of our kin.
