Jammu, April 22: Due to law and order situation following which the violent protests were held in Handwara and other places in the Valley the Election Commission of India has postponed the May 16 byelection to the Anantnag Assembly constituency in South Kashmir
Five people have died and scores have been injured since an alleged incident of molestation of a young girl in Handwara last week.
After the death of her father, former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, in January, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti was planning to contest from Anantnag
It is constitutionally binding for her to become a member either of the Legislative Council within six months of taking over as Chief Minister on April 4 or the member the Assembly
She has a deadline till October 3 to become an MLA or MLC. There are precedents of Farooq Abdullah in 1983 and Mufti Sayeed in 2003 getting elected to the Council to stay on as CMs.
But, for Mehbooba, making this choice would be a setback. She has won all Assembly elections she has contested since 1996.
