Jammu, 21 May: The Election Commission has announced the schedule for Anantnag Bypolls. The election date has been set for June 19 and the counting would be done on June 22.
Earlier there were allegations by the opposition parties in Jammu and Kashmir calling the postponement of elections for Anantnag by the Election Commission as a Unilateral decision that would favour PDP.
The deferment was sought by the ruling state government citing the law and order situation and the lack of security in the state as most of the Army has been called for security setup across five states in India where elections were due the results of which came out yesterday.
The Anantnag Assembly constituency was scheduled to go to polls on May 16 to fill the vacancy created by the demise of former Chief Minister and MLA Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. Mehbooba, who succeeded her late father Sayeed as Chief Minister, is a Lok Sabha member from Anantnag and was expected to contest for the Assembly seat.
