Jammu, January 23: According to an Early Times report, Land mafia in nexus with the Forest and Revenue department officials has captured thousand of kanals of state forest land and has converted it into colonies.
The land mafia has succeeded in their plan by tampering records with no check from administration and political leadership who are said to have joined hands with them. Though the nexus is spread across the state but the district of Rajouri is the worst victim of all.
As per this news report, 396018 kanals of government land in Rajouri is either under encroachment or is illegally occupied and the district tops the list in notoriety for illegal encroachments in the 22 districts of the state according to records shown by J&K State Revenue Department in 2013 state assembly.
About Jammu region, 1603580 kanals of land is illegally occupied or encroached while the record in Udhampur district is of 152416 kanals land, in Ramban, it is 167521 kanals. The report also says that , 141524 kanals of land is encroached in Reasi including 97133 kanals in Samba, 129717 kanals in Poonch , 177551 kanals in Doda , 104746 kanals in Kathua and 75159 kanals in Kishtwar district.
As per two members of a NGO, “an unholy criminal nexus is prevailing in Rajouri district between the officials at the helms of affairs in Forest, Revenue and Municipality Departments respectively and the land mafia which has encroached thousands of kanals of state land in the district especially under the jurisdiction of Rajouri and Thannamandi.”
