Srinagar, November 28:  It is being suspected that a Special Police Officer (SPO) from South Kashmir who went missing on November 10 has joined some terror group.

As per media reports, the SPO has been identified as Rakib Bashir who is the resident of Zodoora in Pulwama district. The news of him joining militant ranks has been confirmed by a senior police officer in Srinagar. “Bashir was engaged by the police almost a month back, has now joined militant ranks. We are verifying the facts but at this moment we do not know which militant group he has joined,” said Senior Police Officer.

The officer added, “The SPO was engaged by the police almost a month back. His order for disengagement has already been issued after he went missing. The missing report was lodged by his parents. The SPO had some association with militant groups in the past as well.”

However, according to Senior Superintendent of Police(SSP), Pulwama, Tejinder Singh, “The SPO did not flee with any weapon as he had not properly joined as an SPO. In the past, Bashir was working as part-time worker at a bank in Pulwama.”

Last month too, two militants, who had deserted the force as SPOs in September and rejoined militants, were killed in a gunfight in Doda district of the Jammu region. Also, a police constable Naseer Ahmad Pandit who was posted at the residence of minister Altaf Bukhari in the Sheikh Bagh neighbourhood of Lal Chowk joined Hizbul Mujahideen earlier this year.

This year, over 40 youths have joined militants in the Kashmir region and most of them belonged to south Kashmir.
