Army man arrested for kidnapping two people in Kupwara
Srinagar, December 10: A local Territorial Army man has been arrested by the Jammu and Kashmir Police in Kupwara. He was allegedly accused of kidnapping two civilians of the district.
The two kidnapped residents have been identified as Ghulam Jeelani Khatana (46) and Mir Hussain (50) who were kidnapped by Manzoor Ahmad Khwaja of 160 Battalion. The missing report of these two civilians was lodged on November 17 by their families.
According to the DIG, North Kashmir, Gareeb Das, “The missing reports was registered by the families of these two men at the police station in Kalapora. The two families also alleged that both of them were taken by this Army man on the pretext of giving them jobs but they had not returned since then.”
Both the families said that the TA man Manzoor Khawaja had assured them that both the men were deployed in the Keran sector as porters. The families fear that the two missing persons might have got killed in a fake encounter.
After arresting Manzoor by the police, he was produced before a Kupwara court and was remanded in custody till December 11.
The police has started interrogating khwaja but the army has denied the charges. As per a senior Army officer. “The police have begun investigations and we are extending all support. The Army has zero tolerance for human rights violations and it is incorrect to say that missing persons have been killed in a fake encounter.”
However, the family persons of these missing persons were shown photographs of four militants killed in encounters since November 15 but they denied any resemblances.
Meanwhile, a complaint has also been filed at Trehgam police station in Kupwara of another resident of the district, Ali Mohammad Sheikh (35), reportedly missing.
