Awantipora encounter; army operation in many villages continues


Pulwama: Operation against the militants is in progress in few villages around Awantipora area in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, official sources said on Thursday.

The encounter erupted late yesterday afternoon after security forces launched operation near Goripora area of Awantipora.

The area is in close vicinity of Indian Air Force’s Awantipora Base, one of the largest aerodromes in north India. This is the third major operation in south Kashmir during current month.

Top police official said that two militants were killed in the ongoing operation till now. He said the cordon and search operation was in progress in Wandakhpora and adjacent villages.

One of the slain Lashkar militants Abu Okasha, was wanted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Udhampur attack on a BSF convoy in August last year that resulted into death of two BSF troopers.

The situation in the area was tense but under control, police sources said.

They said that two more militants are believed to be holed up in the cordoned area.
