The Bajrang Dal faction of Jammu and Kashmir today held a protest in Jammu and demanded that Valentine’s Day, which is celebrated every year on the 14th of February, be celebrated as the Shaheedi Diwas of Bhagat Singh. One of the protesters from the group attacked the day that lovers across the globe saying, “Valentine’s Day is a western influence and should not be accepted as part of ‘our’ culture.”
Asserting the need to place emphasis on the heroes of the Indian freedom struggle the group demanded, “14 February should be celebrated as the Shaheedi Diwas of the hugely popular Bhagat Singh. He was the true idol of the youth in those times and sacrificed himself for the freedom of this great nation.”
Alongside this, the Shri Ram Sena arm of Jammu and Kashmir also made calls on similar lines. A few days ago Ram Sena had called a press conference near General Bus Stand Jammu wherein they decided to celebrate 14 Feb as Martyrs day. The branch suggested that it was on 14 February when the death sentence of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev was announced.
The spokes person suggested, “Because the three freedom fighters -Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev – received their death sentence on 14 February, we think that instead of 14 Feb being celebrated as Valentine’s Day, we should celebrate it as Shaheedi Diwas.”
It is however peculiar to note that the trio was sentenced to death on October 7 in 1930 and not on February 14. Also, it is important to remember that the Shaheedi Diwas of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev is on March 23.
