The strike in Srinagar today called by separatists evoked only a partial response in the city with minor clashes witnessed between protesters and security forces. Shops remained mostly opened across the city barring the separatist stronghold of Lal Chowk. Vendors in the city went about business as usual and transport also plied normally in the city. Government offices, banks functioned normally but educational institutions remained closed due to the strike call given by various outfits.
The strike was called to protest against the firing of tear gas shells during a protest yesterday in which some rounds landed up inside the masjid. Separatist leaders said that firing of shells inside the religious place was wrong, and meant disrespect to the people. Sources meanwhile said that raising of Pak flags led to clashes between security forces, and youth who tried to march towards Nowhatta chowk after the Friday prayers.
