It is 48 km from Srinagar. This reserve covers an area of about 180 sq.km. It is at 2400 metres above sea level at its lowest and climbs upto 4300 metres.Himalayan musk deer, bears and red fox are major mammals. Highland species migratory as well as resident birds. The area holds a rich cover of vegetation. The dominant forest consisting of conifers which account for about 90% .The principal species are cedrus, deodar, pinus, griffithi, pindrow etc. The best time to visit this place is September to March.
Overa –Aru Biosphere Reserve
It is located 76 km from Srinagar and close to Pahalgam. The animals that live here include musk deer, the brown bear and the Leopard. There are many types of birds also like koklas, snow cock, rhesus macaque etc. This reserve begins at 3000 metres above the sea level and goes right up to 5425 metres. Prime viewing time for the upper areas is from May to August. In the lower areas, for birds viewing the best time is March to May and for animals viewing from September to March.
