To issue or not to issue a passport to separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani has brought out the differences in coalition partners BJP, and PDP which formed the government after weeks of discussion. However, it seems that overtly the two parties may have decided to set aside the difference but the fundamental opposition in their positions can never be forgotten. While the BJP has opposed granting of passport to the octogenarian the PDP wants the centre to grant Geelani the necessary documents for travel abroad.
The separatist leader has already asked the passport office in Srinagar to issue the travel document as he wants to visit his ailing daughter in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. A Hurriyat spokesperson said that Geelani’s daughter seriously ill, and the separatist leader wanted to go there and meet her but without the travel document it was not possible.
The PDP has come out in the support of the Hurriyat leader, and it’s president Mehbooba Mufti said that government should not become a hurdle in him getting a passport. Mufti said that earlier also passport has been issued to him.
BJP meanwhile said that it was not against giving passport to Geelani but he should apologize for disrespecting the Indian flag, and calling for J&K’s secession. He should fulfill all the norms and conditions which must be fulfilled by an Indian citizen.
