Jammu and Kashmir is a land of beauty, be it nature or people, we have always had the best of them. And when beauty meets talent, the outcome is even better. Here are a few personalities born in the State with exceptional talent and eventually marked their spot in Bollywood with pride.
1. Raaj Kumar
Raaj Kumar born Kulbhushan Pandit who has remarkably left his movie viewers in awe with his distinct style and dialogue delivery, was a Kashmiri. He appeared in the oscar-nominated film Mother India and then on set his career in over 70 Hindi films. With his career lasting for more than four decades, he is an unforgettable part of Indian Cinema.
The ultimate villain of the golden era of Cinema was born in Srinagar as Omkar Nath Dhar. He has played the role of Narad Muni in more than 60 films and later he did total justice with the grey characters he played in the 60s, 70s and 80s. His son Kiran Kumar also enterd the industry after him who worked in many regional films and established himself as a television star as well.
3. Anupam Kher
One of the mose recognized faces of the valley, Anupam Kher made it big in Bollywood with his memorable roles in the Indian Cinema. Appearing in several hundred films and plays he has marked his place in bollywood with his note worthy performaces. He has been a part of Oscar winning Silver Linings Playbook in 2013, has been honored with Padma Shri and has won Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Comic Role five times. He has hosted a few TV shows before and the recent The Anupam Kher Show has become a big hit with the very 1st episode.
4. Katrina Kaif
Born in Hong Kong Katrina Kaif, one of the most avered beauties of Bollywood was born to a Kashmiri buisnessman. Her background is though enshrouded with mystery as there have been questions on the authenticity of her claims of having a Kashmiri Father. Starting her career with Modelling she did a few Telugu Films and eventually entered bollywood becoming an emerging star and is now widely known for her notable beauty and performances working her way up to the top slot.
5. Kunal Khemu
Beginning with his impressive child artist role in the movie ‘Zakhm‘ in the 90s, this valley star has now evolved with his pivotal roles in numerous bollywood flicks after his comeback in the film ‘Kalyug‘. His father is a well known Kashmiri playwright and recipient of several awards as well. He made his debut as a child actor appearing in a Doordarshan TV series and went on as child artist in many famous movies.
6. Sanjay Suri
This actor-producer in Bollywood hails from Srinagar, beginning with many supporting roles he got his big break with Jhankaar Beats in 2003 and now is the co-founder of the film production company Anticlock films. He is co-producer and actor in the film ‘I Am’. After facing hardships in Kashmir they had to run away from the valley overnight in 1990 after his father was killed by terrorists.
Born to a retired Chief Justice of Jammu High Court this actor has struck a chord with the audience in famous films like ‘A Wednesday’ and ‘Peepli Live’. His acting career began with a very small role on television and acting in a few TV advertisements further heading on to play eminent roles in Cinema. In 2010 Bashir’s directorial debut Harud premiered at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival.
8. Raj Zutshi
This kashmiri actor film and television star, grandson to Dina Nath Zutshi a well known radio and TV artist, made transition from thetare to cinema with the film Holi in 1984. With his roleplay in movies as a supporting actor he has done many character roles accredited to him.
9. Muzammil Ibrahim
This drop dead good looking hunk with his distinct style initiated as a supermodel and eventually entered the world of cinema with his film ‘Dhoka‘ and was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. He a very famous Indian Model and has done many prestigious endorsements. He was named ‘King of Ramp‘ during his modelling days and has been known for his good looks and physique.He has been featured consectively for the 6th year by Times of India as the ‘India’s top 50 celebrities’ and was included in the Elle magazine’s ‘top 20 bachelor’s of India’ category.
Apart from these Jammu and Kashmir has credited television and cinema with many rising stars like Iqbal Khan, Tariq Dar, Hina Khan, Mohsin Akhtar, Mohit Raina, Anjali Abrol. Well known film director, screenwriter and producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra hails from Srinagar as well.
