The Institute of Oncology, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital (SMVDNSH) under the aegis of Young Oncologist Group India has organized a symposium on Breast Cancer at their campus in Kakryal near Katra today.
Hon’ble Health Minister, Shri Bali Bhagat graced the occasion and complimented SMVDNSH for having organized the conference within just a few months of opening of the Hospital. He highlighted the need for comprehensive cancer care and encouraged all the participants to work towards providing enhanced care to the patients of the state. While congratulating the Shrine Board and Narayana Group for providing excellent tertiary care treatment especially in cancer treatment in the Kakryal Hospital he also highlighted in detail about the perspective health plan of the State Government.
Earlier in the day the conference was inaugurated by Dr. M.K. Bhandari, Health Secretary, Government of Jammu & Kashmir and presided by Dr. Ashutosh Raghuvanshi, Vice Chairman, MD & Group CEO – Narayana Health in the august presence of senior doctors and staff of SMVDNSH, Jammu. Maj Gen. (Retd.) S.K. Sharma, Member Shrine Board, Shri A K Sahu, CEO – Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board and Dr. (Brig) Man Mohan Harjai, Chief Administrative Officer, SMVDNSH were also present on the occasion. The participants included delegates from Nigeria, Trivandrum, Bengaluru, Chennai, Pondicherry, Kolkata as well as post-graduate students of Oncology specializing in Breast Cancer from J&K. Senior faculty from all over the country discussed emerging trends on treatment of Breast Cancer.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. A Raghuvanshi said, “The Institute of Oncology at our hospital is the pride of Jammu & Kashmir as it is a Centre of Excellence and the only comprehensive cancer unit in the state that recently launched a mobile mammography bus for breast cancer screening donated by Infosys Foundation catering to remote population that do not have access to quality cancer care and specialist doctors in their region”. Such Mobile Screening Facility is first of its kind in the State.
The conference covered areas such as skin and nipple sparing mastectomy, excisional margins, management of borderline lesions and conservative surgery for local recurrence. The participants were abreast with recent trends and future perspectives in breast cancer management. It also covered some of the latest trends and techniques in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.
A special case capsule series – an interactive session was conducted for the post graduate students wherein senior doctors shared their knowledge and experience about the treatment of breast cancer sharing some of the rare and challenging case studies. Workshops were also held on the occasion to improve post graduate medical teaching and encourage evidence based medicine.
The hospital located at Kakryal near Katra in Jammu is equipped with the most advanced Linear Accelerator, which is first in the state and has treated more than 200 cancer patients in the span of just 150 days. The Brachytherapy and Gamma Camera shall also be functional in the Hospital during this month itself.
Besides other who were present on the occasion were Dr. Sandeep Kaul, Consultant Surgical Oncologist, Dr. Muhammad Hussain Mir, Consultant Medical Oncologist and Dr. Vikas Roshan, Consultant Radiation Oncologist being the organizing secretary from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital.
