The IGP said another individual was arrested in connection with the murder but his role is still being investigated. A pistol, which was stolen from the scene of the crime, was recovered from Qayoom. Two mobile phones were also recovered, the top cop said.

Pani said Sajad Gul is now based in Pakistan. He was earlier arrested by the Delhi Police in 2003, and later by the J&K Police in 2016. He obtained a passport fraudulently and left the country in March 2017.

According to Pani, LeT operative Azad Ahmed Malik has been active in the Valley since 2016. Muzafar Ahmad Bhat, meanwhile, hails from Kulgam district and has been a LeT operative. Naveed Jatt, another LeT operative, had fled from the police custody from Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) Hospital in Srinagar in February this year.

Talking about the conspiracy, the J&K IGP said there were a series of malicious social media campaigns on Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms ahead of the high-profile killing. “These (campaigns) were done from Pakistan – we have tangible evidence. The evidence we have in cooperation with service providers is that they belong to Pakistan. It was all part of the LeT conspiracy,” he said.
