Jammu & Kashmir: On 16th May 2018, Union minister of home affairs, Rajnath Singh, announced the ceasefire during the holy month of Ramzan.
Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir will temporarily halt counterinsurgency operations to ensure the Muslim month of fasting passes off peacefully.
The decision was taken just before the arrival of PM Modi in the state.
The demand of declaring the ceasefire was made by Former Chief minister Mehbooba Mufti and other party leaders. However, when her ally, the BJP, opposed the demand and even Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman rejected it summarily, there was little hope.
Rajnath Sing’s twitter statement confirmed the conditional aspect of the initiative, saying, “Security forces reserve the right to retaliate if attacked or if essential to protect the lives of innocent people.” Singh carefully avoided words like “unilateral” and “ceasefire” in his tweets, a fact that suggests this was a deliberate yet tentative decision.
The declaration of ceasefire causes a Chaotic situation in the valley.
Number of terror attack got increased. Recruitment by terrorist groups and grenade attacks also witnessed a spike. The killings of army personals put paid to any hopes for extension of the ceasefire. “A total of 35 persons — 23 terrorists, eight security personnel and four civilians — were killed during the month of Ramzan in Kashmir,” RTI application filed by Jammu-based activist Rohit Choudhary.
The idea of the ceasefire was a flawed one.
Once again Former Chief minister Mehbooba Mufti has requested the Government of India to announce a ceasefire for the one month of Ramadan or Ramzan 2019.
Mehbooba Mufti said, “Ramadan is approaching. People pray day and night and go to mosques. I would like to appeal to the Government of India that just like there was a ceasefire during Ramadan last year, crackdowns, search operations should be stopped so that people of J&K spend at least this one month in relief.”
The demand for ceasefire again by Former Chief minister Mehbooba Mufti has created a contingency again statewide whether this holy month of Ramzan will pass peacefully or it will suffer again just like the previous year, keeping in view the previous statistics of the RTI reports released by the govt. of India.
