A delegation of West Pakistan refugees led by their President Labha Ram Gandhi received favourable response from Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh when it submitted him a charter of demands on Friday.
The delegation urged the Centre to grant them domicile right in Jammu and Kashmir, sought a special package for rehabilitation in the state, right to vote and contest state Assembly elections.
While appreciating the sentiments of the members of the delegation, the home minister assured them that he will look into the matter and take necessary action. Singh said MHA has appointed a nodal officer to exclusively coordinate with the refugee community for redressal of their day to day issues.
The 5,764 families that migrated in 1947 from West Pakistan and have steadily grown into substantive numbers do not have the rights of permanent citizens.
