One of the three militants killed in a gunfight with the police and the CRPF in Chattabal area of Srinagar has been identified as a Fayaz Ahmad Hamaal.
Director General of Police (DGP) SP Vaid said Hamaal was a resident of Fateh Kadal in downtown Srinagar.
Two other militants are believed to be foreigners, police said.
Meanwhile, a police spokesman said that Hamal was operating as an active accomplice of Lashkar-e-Toiba before going underground in April last year.
“He was previously involved in case fir no 83/2017 u/s 392 RPC, 7/25 IA Act, 30 Police Act of police station MR Gunj Srinagar,” he said.
The identities of other two militants are yet to be ascertained.
AK 47 rifles, magazines, UBGL, UBGL Grenades, Grenades, Wire cutter, Medical Kit, and matrix sheets were recovered from their possession, said the spokesman.
He said that the group was planning a major attack, which was foiled.
Meanwhile, DGP SP Vaid taking to social networking site twitter wrote “encounter concluded in Chattabal Srinagar. Three bodies of militants recovered in a clean operation by J&K Police & CRPF. Well done boys.”
