Srinagar, 13 September: The first day of the week has begun with clashes that broke out near the venue of the ‘Big Kashmir Marathon’ at Hazratbal.
The 21km marathon which also had international runners participating was to begin from Naseem Bagh at Kashmir University and go along the scenic Dal Lake.
According to witnesses youth shouted slogans in favour of freedom and pelted rocks on the forces guarding the venue in the varsity.
The police and paramilitary forces had to resort to firing teargas shells on protesters at Habak crossing near the venue as the situation started getting out of hand.
As the Pakistan flags made an entry into the scene, a witness lamented, “The marathon has turned into a disaster.”
At the time of filing of this report, clashes were still going on.
The aim of this marathon, say the organizers, was only to promote a healthy lifestyle and raise awareness about the need to protect dying water bodies.
