A Class X student attempted suicide by hanging himself in a rented room at Nowshera town in the district today. The boy was rushed to Government Medical College (GMCH) in Jammu in a critical condition.

The boy has been identified as Lalit Kumar, son of Shiv Rattan of Uttar Pradesh. He was a student of Government Boys Secondary School. His father, who worked as an electrician in Nowshera town, lives in a rented house.

As alleged by his sister, Lalit was harssed by his NCC teacher on a petty issue, which forced him to take this extreme step. Reportedly, Lalit owed some money to a photographer who was hired by him at his NCC teacher’s request for clicking photos of NCC recruits. Yesterday, his sister found him hanging from a ceiling fan.

On the contrary, the history lecturer and NCC in-charge, Gurcharan Singh said that he had instructed the NCC cadets to provide two photographs for official records and they were also provided NCC uniforms. “No photographer was asked to be hired and the allegations against me are baseless,” he told sources. He also said that the boy was mentally challenged and used to remain absent most of the time from school. “I am ready to face any inquiry and to extend every support to the police,” he added.
