Closing of schools in Jammu region under rationalization unlikely to improve things

The state government is planning to close a large number of schools in the Jammu division in the name of rationalizing where there is no talk of following the same process in Kashmir Valley any time soon. The teaching fraternity in the Jammu region is afraid that the coalition government led by PDP may once again hit the interests of people of this province as BJP leadership has not made it’s stand clear on this issue, and neither opposed the same inside or outside the government.

The school education department has termed this process as rationalization of resources whereby more than a thousand schools in the province across various districts will be closed. The students, and teachers in these schools will be shifted to nearby schools ostensibly to improve quality. However teachers allege that it is just a ruse to reduce the size of education department in Jammu region so that less funds are given for promoting education in this part of the state.

Sources reveal that 334 schools in Jammu,158 in Samba, 347 in Kathua, 123 in Kishtwar, 159 in Rajouri, 189 in Doda and several more are going to be closed in this exercise.

Educationists allege that closing these schools will badly affect the poor students, and also girl students as parents can not afford to send them to far off places. The closing of schools is also going to reduce the number of children getting enrolled in these schools. Instead of closing the schools the government should focus on improving the delivery of education, introducing facilities, and ensuring teachers are regular, and deliver the goods. It would be better to sack the non-performers than simply closing the schools.
