Gadkari to witness ‘Final Blast Ceremony’ for the longest road tunnel between Chenani-Nashri

Jammu: Union Minister of Roads Transport Highways and Shipping, Nitin Gadkari is said to witness the ‘Final Blast Ceremony’ where the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) engineers will drill a hole through the final section of the tunnel between Chenani and Nashri.
The occasion will graced by honorable CM of the State, Mufi Mohamman Sayeed and Deputy CM Nirmal Singh.

This longest road tunnel being built on the Srinagar-Jammu Highway will reduce the total distance by 30 Kilometers. The 9.2 km tunnel is part of 286 km-long four-laning project of the Jammu-Srinagar national highway.

Once this tunnel is operational, it will reduce the traffic Jams on Highway NH-1A that become common in winters due to landslide and snowfall near Patnitop.
The tentative time period for this tunnel to open is one year from now and July 2016 is being touted as the time next year when this tunnel should become operational.
National Highways Authority of India is also constructing a parallel tunnel that will be used for evacuation in case of any eventuality. This escape tunnel will exclusively be for pedestrians
