Consumers have a right to healthy food: CI on World Consumer Rights Day

This year the World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD; March 15) is going to observed with the theme “healthy diets” since bad food habits have become one of ten biggest causes of death worldwide. The main diseases caused by unhealthy diets are obesity, high blood pressure, high blood glucose and high cholesterol which are taking toll of human life.

Consumers International (CI) has given a call to wake up to the harm being caused by unhealthy diets, mainly in the form of processed and fast foods this WCRD. According to CI, all consumers have a right to healthy food leading to a more equitable and sustainable food system.

The World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) is e observed on 15 March to promote basic rights of consumers around the globe. It was in 1983 that the consumer organizations of a large number of countries began observing the WCRD on March 15 by associating themselves with CI as a global voice for consumers.

It is said that CI currently has over 220 member organizations in 115 countries around the world to empower and protect consumers as a watchdog organization everywhere around the world. It also protests against the market abuses and social injustices which undermine or violate the consumer rights.
