Coolie’s Son Owns a ₹100-Crore Company

Nothing can be achieved without struggle and hard work is the only common factor behind almost all the success stories.

PC Musthafa is the man who owns a 100 Crore company. He belongs to a remote village in Wayanad Kerala and his  father was a Coolie who did not even had the primary education.

Musthafa comes from a village which had only one primary school and no roads or electricity at that time. Due to these hurdles, he had to walk for about 4kms daily to go to his school. It is being told that since childhood Musthafa was not much interested in education and he used to help his father with coffee plantations. He was not a very bright student and he even failed in Class 6. After that he planned to drop out of school and help his father in the business. Musthafa loved maths whereas other subjects were his least favourites. But one day his maths teacher, Sir Mathews asked him what he actually wants to become – a teacher or a coolie, Musthafa knew the difference between both the careers so he instantly answered- I want to become a teacher.

And according to Musthafa , his maths teacher was the only inspiration at that time so he studied really hard and stood first in Class 10. After college since he had problems in finance, so he somehow managed to join Farooq College in Kozhikode.Once he completed his junior college, he joined from Regional Engineering College (now National Institute of Technology) and then graduated in the year 1995. Later he received calls from different companies including Motorola and Manhattan Associates which he joined and worked abroad for few years. But Musthafa always wanted to come back home and spend time with his parents and study further.

And one day one of his cousins suggested to sell dosa batter in plastic blags, Musthafa considered his idea and invested ₹25,000. They started their company with the name iD( idli dosa) in a 550 square feet plot, with two grinders, a mixer and a sealing machine. Initially, Musthafa had 50% share in the company while the rest was with his cousins Nasser, Shamsu, Jaffer and Naushad .

In the beginning they targeted around 20 shops in the locality and 100 packets per day, and they thought if this project would be successful, they will invest more money.  Their company started earning profit since day one and they got ₹400, as their first month’s profit which kept growing.

In the year 2007, he received his MBA degree and then assumed the charge of the company as CEO of marketing and finance.

And this is how the company reached the 100-crore mark and presently they have around 1100 employees.

Musthafa has a dream to make iD the most popular brand in the fresh food area and to increase the annual turnover. Within six-seven years, he is planning to hit ₹1,000 crore mark and expanding his employee chain to 5000.
