CRPF jawan opens fire at Ambedkar anniversary fete, held

TUTICORIN: Police on Friday arrested a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan for firing in the air during a function held to celebrate Dr B R Ambedkar’s birth anniversary at Kovilpatti.The soldier was identified as L Paunraj, 31, a resident of RC Street in Keelairal near Kovilpatti. Currently de ployed in Jammu, he had come home on vacation.

A large number of people had gathered at the Ambedkar junction to garland the statue there when Paunraj began firing with a double barrel gun.The incident created panic and police team rushed to spot, picked up Paunraj and brought him to the police station.

Police said the man had allegedly turned emotional while paying respect to the leader and opened fire. Investigations revealed that Paunraj had purchased the gun in Jammu and Kashmir and holds a licence for the weapon. However, officials said that no one was permitted to keep a gun without obtaining clearance from the local authorities concerned

A police officer said that during investigation Paunraj admitted to committing the crime. He told police that he had brought the weapon with him from J&K and wanted to obtain a licence in Tuticorin district as well

 

 Police have registered cases under IPC sections 286 (negligent conduct with respect to explosive substance) and 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) against the jawan.
