DC for strict adherence to traffic rules
SRINAGAR: In connection with Road Safety Act, a meeting was held under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, Dr. Farooq Ahmad Lone here today.
Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Commissioner emphasized importance of road safety and need to disseminate the information about road safety measures especially among youth. He said despite shortage of manpower, the traffic department is playing pivotal role in regulating and managing traffic adding that people’s cooperation is must for minimizing the traffic accidents.
He stressed upon the authorities of the traffic department to continue the road safety awareness campaign with focus in educational institutions and bus stands. He said that drivers have their share of responsibility to safeguard the passengers besides reducing the number of accidents.
The Deputy Commissioner asked the concerned authorities to issue driving licence only to well trained drivers. He urged the people for their co-operation with Traffic Police department in implementing traffic rules effectively.
Dr. Lone said that Government is implementing a comprehensive programme for road widening in Srinagar to decongest the city roads and ensure smooth traffic movement, besides, flyovers are being constructed at various road junctions. He directed the SMC to remove the blockade on footpaths for pedestrians.
On this occasion, the speakers suggested that enforcement of laws pertaining to road safety as laid down in the Motor Vehicles Act should be given due attention to avoid frequent road accidents.
Among others the meeting was attended by Senior Superintendent of Police Srinagar, Additional Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Regional Transport Officer Kashmir, Superintendent of Police Traffic Srinagar, Chief Medical Officer Srinagar, Engineers from R&B, officers of Beacon and other concerned departments, General Secretary Valley Citizens Council Srinagar besides representatives of various NGOs.
