REASI, June 2: The department of Legal Metrology came into inception in the state in the year in 1961 to adopt metric system in trade and commerce as per the policy at the national level. In the year 2003, the department was brought under the administrative control of Ministry of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution. The department of Legal Metrology works for the cause of the consumer.
A few days ago the department’s office at Reasi, booked two restaurant owners for overcharging and imposed them with a fine of Rs 12000.
The Assistant Controller Legal Metrology, Rajesh Heera along with his team, charged a restaurant owner for charging a water bottle more than its MRP on the pretext of additional VAT.
Relevant to mention that the Value Added Tax(VAT) has to be charged on the food prepared by the restaurants only and other products like bottled water, cold drinks are to be sold at the MRP and no additional VAT can be charged on these products, since it is included in the MRP. The general population unaware of this fact is fooled by the fancy restaurants and thoughtlessly pay the high rates.
In another case from Reasi, the owner of the restaurant was fined for selling curd at exorbitant rates.
