Puneet Gupta #OPINION
Shri Narendra Bhai Modi Ji, Charan vandana.
This is just a disgruntled Hindu fan, also a layman, opening his heart to you hoping that the common Hindu sentiment can be expressed through it too. It will soon be a year since you became Prime Minister. Please do not be sceptical about this letter; it is not coming in from any of the opposition parties who cannot handle the place you have put them in. I have rooted for you in the past over casual discussions that often turned to debates with my friends. I have had heated arguments with my Delhi friends about how you were the best choice we have for Prime Minister. That was all last year.
You were at the Vigyan Bhawan for the Canonization event a few days ago where you used this line that sort of re-instated my faith in you, “We cannot accept violence against any religion on any pretext.”
You also said, “My government will ensure that there is complete freedom of faith and that everyone has the undeniable right to retain or adopt the religion of his or her choice without coercion or undue influence.”
Most of us assumed safely that your statements were made in the interests of the minorities who more often than not express their fears about religious extremism, even if the seeds of this fear were sown by ‘some’ party that was in power for over half a century. What the leader of the Sangh said about Mother Teresa is unacceptable and should not have happened.
It should strike you that a sizeable majority of Hindus in the country are against the extremism coming from any corner. Extremist statements made by any group from any community! We hate the terrorists and community that the terrorists belong to. The world has always known Hindus to be a peace loving people. Why let that image be distorted to beyond repair? Why not rein in the tactics being used by the now-commonly-labelled-as-extremist Hindu groups?
The statements made by our own Hindu right wingers were one of the major reasons why the intellect and National capital showed the BJP the most vehement form of rejection. This, even when my own state of Jammu and Kashmir accepted you! You found youth as one of your biggest supporters after you employed social media as one of the mediums to communicate to the praja. Do you not think that the same people who became your fans because they saw the good that they read about you can easily turn against you too?
The instances of Hindu extremist violence – be it physical or a fiery hate-inciting speech, cannot be excused as scattered events. I want to see you in power again, as I still believe that under your leadership India can see things it should have seen a decade ago. I also believe, however, that a good leader also takes care of the rogue elements in his team.
