Death Zone in Jammu? Children being born with deformities!

In the last 16 years, a very high number of children with deformities born in the industrial hub of Govindsar, Kathua, which has disturbed the Health authorities of Kathua District. The health department here has launched a campaign to conduct the medical examination of all the affected children in order to come across the facts and causes of the problem.

The reports of a local daily mentioned that major issues like physical and mental disorder, multiple problems of  liver, pancreas, kidneys has been recorded in the children born recently in the Govindsar area of Kathua district.

Govindsar area has a population of 5000 people and scores of children born here are either physically handicapped or mentally retarded. Most of these also suffer from various chronic ailments in the village for a pretty long time and around half a dozen have children also died due to same ailments.

Very recently a boy named Pawan died due to some liver infection at DH Kathua. He was just 15 years old.

The villagers also blamed the Health Department of Kathua district for not doing anything about the problem in the village for  last 15 years. They are now demanding a clinical examination of these children with proper treatment and the conduction of various tests to ascertain the causes of the problem.

The Chief Medical Officer, Kathua has issued instructions few days ago to conduct test 20 such handicapped and mentally retarded children following with their treatment at District Hospital Kathua but it failed because of the lack of proper examination facilities at the District Hospital. They were sent to GMC Jammu and PGI Chandigarh for compete examination and  the expenses will be borne by Health Department, Kathua.

The department has now decided to provide free of cost treatment to all these children under National Health Programme. The department has also claimed that the local population has related the issue with the pollution of factories and to get the facts checked, the Pollution Control Board (PCB) is ordered to conduct the water and other soil tests.
