By now, the launch of ‘Calm Down’, a massive intelligence operation in the Kashmir valley is widely known. The purpose of the operation to identify and remove the ‘hidden leadership’, which has bred an uncontrollable unrest in the valley for the last two months.
The focus would be to put a finger on the leaders and the funders of the agitation.
According to a report in India today, top sources said that the operation is to work at different levels. Foremost, the funding to ‘trouble makers’ has to be blocked and cut out and alongside Calm Down is to work towards retrenching the contact between ideologues, handlers and the mischief makers especially in rural areas.
The ‘hidden leadership’ of the agitation had already been identified and prepared to create unrest in the valley weeks before Hizbul Mujahideen Militant Burhan Wani was even neutralised, say reports. The Holy Pilgrimage to Amarnath was a focal point as has been on several occasions in past as well.
According to an official, “Specific youth had been identified in early June when the separatist leaders had begun travelling to South Kashmir and plans were underway to create unrest. The youth had been identified at Mohalla level and initial payments were made too. Burhan Wani’s killing helped create the false narrative of victimhood which was then circulated to flaming emotions.”
THE SEPARATISTS NEVER SPEAK DIRECTLY
The passage of information was not directly through the Hurriyat leadership. Other channels from across the Pir Panjal are still actively putting any and every word across. ‘Calm Down’ seeks to cut out these channels to restore normalcy in the valley.
The Jammu and Kashmir police, who have a local reach, now possess the details about the men controlling the agitation. The army have moved in to South Kashmir, which shall come as a great aid in bolstering the State police and the Central Reserve Police who can move deeper into villages and curtail the area of operations of the anti-national elements.
Teams are already active in ‘reclaiming’ Tral, the hometown of Burhan Wani, whose killing sparked the present unrest.
According to Lt Gen (retd) Ata Hasnain, former Chinar Corps Commander, the Army has now a dominant presence in the terrain that includes Tral, Shopian, Kulgam and pockets of Anantnag. The increased and strengthened presence itself will send out a signal to terrorists and the secret leadership of the current agitation.
The army will dominate the area, the police and CRPF will manage crowds and the State government will provide relief as part of the multi pronged strategy.
“There is a multi-agency operation currently underway to stabilize the valley. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is probing Naeem Gilani, son of Pro Pakistan Hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani. The Income Tax Department is probing not only SAS Geelani but several other Hurriyat leaders. Several fake and shell companies are also under the scanner. The police is in control in urban areas and gradually moving back into rural areas too,” sources added.
