Did you know Arjuna was transformed to a woman for a year?

Even in Hinduism, where people strongly condemn homosexuality, it must be discussed that even Hindu Gods have had gender transformations so it is better if we understand this gender equality concept in a flexible way and do not criticize the same sex marriages because it is the soul that matters not the body.

Even Arjuna , the great warrior was once turned into a woman for a year.

Arjuna, the son of Indra was invited by his father at his place. One of the heavenly maidens (Urvashi) of the Indra’s palace was strongly attracted to Arjuna . Indra by judging the interest of his son in Urvashi thought of offering Urvashi to his son.

Urvashi followed the instructions and thus went to Arjuna’s room with intentions to make love wit him. As soon as she entered Arjuna’s room he called her “mother” of the Kurus which offended Urvashi and she cursed Arjuna to be a enunch for the rest of his life so that he can dance and sing with other women so that he realise his mistake and regret till he is alive. But later on Indra’s request, Urvashi curtailed the curse to a short span of one year only. While in that one year, Arjuna spent his life as a woman and assumed the name  “ Brihannala”. His exile period was spent at King Virata’s Matsya Kingdom where he impressed the king with his dancing and singing. Amazed by his skills, king ordered him to take over as dance master of Princess Utara. Later when the exile period was over, King offered his daughter Uttara to Arjuna but he refused saying that he considered her as his daughter since beginning but made a suggestion that Uttara may marry his son , Abhimanyu.
