Exclusive:

Half knowledge is always dangerous. First of all, it’s not 33 crore deities. It’s 33 Koti. Koti has two meanings in Sanskrit:

1. Crore (10 million)
2. Type or Category.

In our religious text, it’s written that we have 33 Koti deities and here Koti means type, not crore. Means we have 33 types of major deities – 8 Vasus, 11 Rudras, 12 Adityas and 2 Ashwinikumars. Total: 8 + 11 + 12 + 2 = 33. They are:

8 Vasus:

1. Aap
2. Dhruva
3. Som
4. Dhar
5. Anil
6. Anal
7. Pratyush
8. Prabhas (he is the one who got the curse and born as greatest warrior Bhishma).

11 Rudras:

1. Shambhu
2. Pinaki
3. Girish
4. Sthanu
5. Bharga
6. Bhava
7. Sadashiva
8. Shiva
9. Har
10. Sharva
11. Kapali

12 Adityas:

1. Anshuman
2. Aryaman
3. Indra
4. Twashta
5. Dhatu
6. Parjanya
7. Pusha
8. Bhaga
9. Mitra
10. Varun
11. Vavasvan (Surya)
12. Vishnu

2 Ashwani Kumars:

1. Nyasatra
2. Drastra

The misconception that many people including the Hindus have, is that Sanatan Dharma talks about 33 crore gods and goddesses. This is totally wrong. The source of this misinformation lies in the wrong interpretation of the Vedic texts during the time of the British rule in India. The wrong meaning was interpreted and it was propagated in a way that nobody knows the truth.

It is important to verify the information you get from unauthenticated sources like the mythological shows in television, ill-written books and translations etc. Learn to read from authentic texts and change your misconceptions.
