Dr. Karan Singh, Vikramaditya decline to be JKOA patrons

Jammu Kashmir News

JAMMU, March 11:  Jammu and Kashmir Olympic Association (JKOA) today suffered a major set-back when two of his recently nominated patrons, Rajya Sabha MP, Dr Karan Singh and PDP MLC and president of J&K Basketball Association, Yuvraj Vikramaditya Singh declined to be the patron in chief and patron of the Association.

Vikramaditya Singh in a statement issued to the press said that he was surprised to notice his name figure as the patron and that of his father as the patron in chief of JKOA published in the leading dailies of the state the previous day. “I am shocked that no one from JKOA ever approached me or my father to take our concurrence. So, I take strong exception to this blatant unauthorized use of our names by the JKOA as I understand that these elections to the new body of the JKOA have been done in total contravention to the guidelines of J&K State Sports Council and the Indian Olympic Association”.

“Further, I gather from the news paper reports that the JKOA elections have also been declared as null and void by the State Sports Council. I’m of the firm opinion that we who are in public life and are doing our humble bit to contribute for the promotion of sports in the state have a bigger responsibility to abide by the law, rules, guidelines and procedures established therein. Hence in view of the circumstances confronting the JKOA, it would not be proper for me to be the patron of this sports body. I humbly decline to be the patron of the JKOA” the statement added.

Pertinent to mention here that yesterday, Joint Secretary of the J&K State Sports Council and president of J&K Football Association, Zamir Thakur disassociated himself from the JKOA. Zamir Thakur was nominated as one of the vice presidents of the Olympic body in the state.
