Drug peddlers caught in Udhampur

Udhampur, January 12: The district of Udhampur is becoming a safe harbour for drug peddlers because adequate measures were not taken to stop them.

According to the sources the drug mafia has grown in the area and number of youth has been pushed into this terrible habit of substance abuse in the last few years. The drugs are being supplied in small quantities from the Valley have been reaching the Rathian, Battal Ballian, Cherry Swail, Jakhani and Garnai Lota areas  near the highway for the past few years.

The report also said that the mafia  is expanding its reach in Udhampur targeting the students of educational institutes located near the highway and the drugs are being sold to these kids through tea stalls outside the institutions.

“These tea stalls sell all kind of drugs but smack being the most popular among addicts as it is injected into the body,” said a senior intelligence officer.

However, the Udhampur Police claims of arresting two people in a drive against drug menace. The two suspects have been identified as Shubam Gupta and Harjeet Singh who are believed to be involved in drug smuggling in the district. The police have also recovered 800 gm of white powdery substance and syringes filled with drugs from their possession.

According to SSP Udhampur, Mohammad Suleman Choudhary, the men have been supplying drugs to youths in different areas of city. The police have booked both of them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and further investigation is going on to find out the kingpins.
