The much awaited assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir will be held in five phases between November 25 and December 20. This was announced today by the Election Commission of India after much deliberations, and taking into account the reports sent by the state administration, and government. The counting of votes will be held on December 23, a time when the winter will have set in the entire state, and particularly Kashmir.

The dates of election are November 25, December 2,9, 14, and 20. The voting has been planned in a phased manner to ensure that harsh winter, and militant activity does not disturb the polls. National Conference, and Congress are presently ruling this hilly state, and facing a strong anti-insurgency as PDP, and BJP are turning the heat on the coalition. The election is also likely to test the preparation of both election commission, and security forces which will be on tenterhooks given the fluid situation of the state.

For Congress the election in Jammu and Kashmir will be crucial as it has lost polls in key bastions of Haryana, and Maharashta, and a debacle in J&K would be nothing less than a disaster for the party. The National Conference which is ruling the state has also been in favour of a delayed elections as it is facing storng anger of the people due to different issues such as corruption, and non-performance. The PDP and BJP however will welcome the announcement of elections with enthusiasm as they a strong chance of a possible win in the elections. It is being speculated that both the parties might enter into a post-poll alliance to form the government. While the PDP is expected to do good in Kashmir, the BJP lead by Modi charisma is likely to sweep the Jammu belt.
