JAMMU, May 11: A Film produced by two youth of Poonch district has made it to the Cannes Film Festival to be held on 14th of May. `Mantostaan’ – produced by Tariq Khan under the direction of Rahat Kazmi, is shot in beautiful locations of Jammu and Poonch. Both, Tariq and Rahat have left for France with other team members to attend the film festival.
The duo has earlier directed `Identity Card’, based on the Kashmir conflict.
Tariq Khan, the producer of the film, acknowledged that militancy erupted in border district of Poonch and several youth were brainwashed to pick up guns. He also added that encounters were a routine in the area. Being a native of Surankote, his dreams were of a different level altogether and after consulting Rahat Kazmi, they came up with an idea of making films at local level. Without any background of films or finance, they left for Mumbai and then began there struggle in Bollywood. They took to making short films with the ordinary camera.
They assisted many reputed Directors and Producers in shooting ad films and serials. After spending some time in Delhi and Mumbai, they decided to shoot a film on their own. Finally in 2014, film `Identity Card’ was released. The movie was well-accepted across the country.
`Mantostaan’ is a dark satire based on four controversial short stories (Khol Do, Thanda Ghosht, Assignment and Aakhri Salute) of legendary Urdu writer Saadat Hassan Manto. It is the first movie based on the largest mass migration of millions of people. It depicts stories of mass-slaughtering during the India-Pakistan partition of 1947. In `Mantostaan’, Rahat Kazmi and Tariq Khan teamed up with their third counterpart Zahid Qureshi, who is their Line producer and handles all the production responsibilities. Zahid has even played a cameo in the film.
Rahat’s younger brother, Shoib Nikash Shah, is an acclaimed actor and he is playing one of the lead roles in the film opposite Sonal Sehgal. Other key characters are played by Raghubir Yadav, Virendra Saxena, Tariq Khan, Sakshi Bhat and Rahat Kazmi himself.
After the film was selected for Cannes, big production houses and reputed distributors including many foreigners have approached Tariq and Rahat for buying the copy right of the Film and its release distribution.
