Srinagar: At least five young boys were detained after massive clashes broke out in the old city here between youth and forces after Friday prayers.
A senior police offical confirmed the detentions and said five stone pelting youths were arrested from the spot.
“We have detained five youth who were caught stone pelting from Nowhatta area,” the official said.
As soon as Friday prayers culminated at the historic Jamia Masjid in the Nowhatta area, the youth started marching amid slogans.
However, police who remain deployed there, swung into action and fired several tear-gas cannisters to disperse them.
The protest soon spread to nearby localities of Gojwara, Rajouri Kadal, etc.
The protesting youth showed resistance and hurled stones and bricks at the police and paramilitary forces.
Police also said they seized some bikes which belong to stone throwers.
The traffic movement in the area remained suspended and the commuters took alternate routes to reach their destinations.
