Flash floods hit Jammu; one washed away as rains create havoc in the region
Heavy rains caused havoc across several localities in the Jammu province because of the constant rise of water level in Tawi, Chenab and Basantar. One person was reportedly washed away in the flash flood as the dingy lanes of several localities are overflowing with water from the local water bodies. As per reports by the Police one person was washed away in a nallah at Jallo Chak area of Gangyal and has been identified as Kint Lal Sharma of Jallo Chak. The body was noticed in the nallah by a few locals and the police was informed. The body was fished out and shifted to the GMC Hospital and was handed over to the family after autopsy.
Meanwhile, the low lying areas including Krishna Nagar, Narwal, Bhathini, Gadigarh, Bari Brahmana, Channi Himmat, Jewel Chowk were the worst hit areas by flash floods. In areas including Kunjwani, Canal Road, Bhagwati Nagar, Bahu Fort, Trikuta Nagar, Channi Himmat, houses were also damaged and some cars also plunged into nallahs.
Several families were rescued and public was evacuated in parts of Pir Kho, Baba Basti, Gujjar Nagar and Bhagwati Nagar. State BJP Chief and party MP Jugal Kishore visited several places to take stock of the situation and directed the civic authorities to launch encroachment drive to clear the encroachments along the water bodies.
The people have been cautioned not to venture out in avalanche and landslide prone areas. All the officials and concerned departments have been alerted to remain in complete readiness to meet any eventuality.
