Gandhi Nagar Women’s college student messages brother about suicide; presently missing

Jammu:  A B.A first year student of the Government Women College Gandhi Nagar, identified as Smita, committed suicide by jumping into the Chenab River.
The incident came to light when the deceased’s brother checked his ‘WhatsApp’ message. In the message, the girl had texted about her decision to end her life and had asked her brother to take care of their parents. As soon as the family read the message, they were taken aback.
As per the girl’s father, Vijay Kumar, Smita left home for college around 8:30 in the morning and around 10:40 a.m she had called him asking him to show her mark sheet to her mother and said that she would be home soon. Around 10 minutes later, the brother received her message at 10:53 a.m.
The family lives in Krishna Nagar Jammu and on receiving the message, they informed the Police officials in Akhnoor and rushed to the location. On their way to Akhnoor, they tried calling her number, but the phone was switched off.
The police reached the Jiya Pota Ghat, where they found the girl’s slippers, bag, her scarf and her umbrella, but there was no sign of the girl or her phone. The officers then asked the locals if they had seen the girl, but all in vain, no one had seen her.
SHO Akhnoor Pushpinder Singh, said that a case has been reported and the police have started the investigation. No assurance has been given yet whether the girl really jumped into the river or not. The police also called in divers to find the body. All attempts are being made to find the girl.
The police are suspicious about the entire incident on the other hand the family is traumatized.
