Srinagar: Hurriyat hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani refused to owe any obedience to India by saying that he is not an Indian. Geelani had visited the Passport Seva Kendra in Srinagar today and while exiting he said, “By birth I am not Indian.” Geelani on Friday completed various formalities at the passport office here for getting a passport. Though Geelani’s passport states him as an Indian National he says, that he is not an Indian by birth. While talking to media outside Passport office he said that It is a compulsion that we have to travel with an Indian passport.
The separatist leader had sought a passport to visit his daughter Farhat Jabeen Geelani who is in a critical condition and is admitted in a hospital in Saudi Arabia. BJP had criticized Geelani and had said that he should first declare loyalty and then fly out, the government will not object it.
Even though PDP president Mehbooba Mufti was backing Geelani’s passport plea, Geelani’s application had generated a row with the Bharatiya Janata Party opposing it.
The Peoples Democratic Party, however, backed his request, calling it a humanitarian issue.
