Jammu, June 6: The decision that girl students of the second and third year pursuing Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.) course at Government SPMR College of Commerce will be shifted to the Government College for Women at Gandhi Nagar and Parade has been reversed. The department of Higher Education has decided that female students can pursue the course in the same college or seek admission to either of the two women colleges. According to earlier reports, it was decided that starting this academic session 2015-16, the SPMR college would enrol only male students for the BCom undergraduate course due to limited space for students to be accommodated.
This decision was taken in a meeting under the chairmanship of Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh to discuss various issues regarding setting up of an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Jammu. Prof Satinder Singh, Principal, GGM Science College, and nodal principal of city colleges, said that the girl students had the option to choose the college from which they wanted to pursue the course. He also said that the Higher Education Department was not going to force the students to seek admission in different colleges against their choice.
Prof Satinder Singh further went on to say that the decision had been taken for the benefit of the students. The higher education department is aware of the fact that the Commerce College lacks space but that is not going to become a limiting point in accommodating those students who want to pursue BCom course from the institution.
