SRINAGAR, AUGUST 12: Governor N.N. Vohra, has expressed grief on the death of 11 persons in a road accident which occurred yesterday at Sadhna Top in Tangdhar area of Kupwara district. He has conveyed his heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved families and prayed for eternal peace to the departed souls.
A Spokesman of the Raj Bhavan disclosed that the Governor has expressed regret and deep anguish that while over a thousand innocent persons lose their lives and 6-7000 get injured in recurring road accidents every year, the Police and Transport authorities have still to implement stringent measures to, interalia, check the licences of all those who drive public transport vehicles and, besides, the road worthiness of all vehicles which are being used for transporting people. Those who drive transport vehicles in difficult hill areas should be required to pass a special hill driving test and, besides, the Police must enforce punitive measures for the overloading of public transport vehicles, which is a common sight.
