Although the government has defused the tense situation in Jammu by acceding to the demands of the Sikh community but it should remain a matter of concern as to why the situation turned bad in first place. At a high level meeting in which top government officials, and leaders of the Sikh community were present, the government transferred SSP, Jammu Uttam Chand, suspended the SHO Satwari Kulbir Singh Chowdhary, and agreed to release the Sikh youth detained in connection with violent protests, pay compensation to the family of the deceased, and also register an FIR against the police official who killed the Sikh Youth.
With the transfer of the current SSP, the government asked Additional SP Jammu to officiate as the police chief in the city. The Sikh youth who was killed in the police firing would be cremated today at his native village Chouhala. Earlier the police had agreed to register an FIR under Section 302 against SOG constable, who had alleged fired after the mob attack. Members of the Sikh community have decided to call of their protests after the government agreed to most of their demands.
The situation in Jammu remained tense yesterday as army staged flag march in Satwari, and RS Pura areas. People blocked roads in Kathua, Digiana, and in Udhampur to protest against the killing. Mobile internet services were stopped, and telecom companies were asked to shut net on the mobiles to ensure there was no spread of rumours.
