Rajouri, September 15: Curfew was imposed in Rajouri district on Wednesday night after tension prevailed between members of two communities following major stone pelting incidents. As has been reported in one section of media, there were rumours in main Rajouri town over beef consumption while others reported the killing of a camel.
“Curfew was imposed in the Rajouri town tonight. There were incidents of heavy stone-pelting and communal tension in the town,” IG Johnny William, who is in charge DIG range Rajouri-Poonch, told PTI.
To keep the situation under control, Army was deployed in some areas and during night the army staged a flag-march.
Police also had to fire tear gas shells to control the crowd, during which more than 2 dozen people have been injured.
As per media reports, the clashes started over animal sacrifice during the festival of Eid. A group of people headed towards Rajouri from Palma village were stopped by members of the minority community for allegedly sacrificing beef. But the group claimed they had sacrificed a camel and not cow. As soon as the news spread, people from two communities clashed, in which several people were injured.
In the ensuing violence, three shops located in City Chowk of old town area were attacked last night. At about 11:30 pm, five to six persons attacked a car showroom at Badhoon village and also set on fire two cars parked there.
Meanwhile, an investigation has been initiated by the police, under supervision of SSP Rajeshwar Singh, into the alleged instigation of mob which led to damage to property and a case has been registered in the matter.
